Rangpur teacher family killings were premeditated: Police

Police said the quadruple murder of former Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three members of his family was premeditated.

Rangpur Metropolitan Police Detective Branch (DB) Deputy Commissioner Sanatan Chakraborty confirmed the matter on Monday. He added that before and after the killings, the two arrested suspects spoke on their mobile phones 80 times in 80 hours and it is an unusual level of communication.

Sanatan noted that Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das spoke on the phone almost once every hour before and after the murder. Because of this type of communication, the possibility of the killings being premeditated cannot be ruled out.

Previously, police had informed that Siddhartha and Mugdha went to the rooftop of Ganapati’s house to consume Yaba. They had consumed eight to nine Yaba tablets before and after the murder.

Although the issue of the suspects consuming Yaba had come to the front from the beginning, their dope tests were conducted 10 days after the murder and about 8 days after their arrest. Police said no traces of drugs was found in Siddhartha and Mugdha.

Meanwhile, police applied for a three-day remand to interrogate Siddhartha and Mugdha. Since they gave confessional statements under Section 164 in court, the court permitted the police to interrogate them at the jail gate for two days, three hours daily. Judge Rafiqul Islam of the Rangpur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court issued the order.

On 22 August, police recovered the bodies of Ganapati, his wife, daughter, and son from their residence in Machhuapara, Rangpur city. Following the incident, neighbor Siddhartha and Mugdha from the same area were arrested.

Ganapati’s elder brother, Gopinath Chakraborty, filed a murder case at the Kotwali Police Station. DB is investigating the case.
