Noakhali Court Sentences Man to Death for Child Rape and Murder

A Noakhali court sentenced Shahadat to death on Monday for raping and murdering his cousin Asma Akter, 5, and fined him Tk 1,00,000.
Judge Farzana Akter of the Noakhali Special Children’s Tribunal delivered the verdict in the afternoon.
Special Public Prosecutor Salim Shahi of the Nari O Shishu Nirjaton Daman Tribunal confirmed the matter. He said, “The order also stated that the convict must be hanged by the neck until death. The accused was present in court when the verdict was announced.”
The convict, Shahadat, 26, lived in Chatkhil upazila. Asma was the daughter of Maulana Md Shahjahan of the same village. Case records showed that Asma went missing from her home at around 1:30 pm on 24 March 2022.
Police recovered her body from a septic tank behind the house nine days later and then arrested Shahadat.
During the investigation, Shahadat provided a statement in court. He admitted that he strangled the child to death after the rape, fearing the incident would be exposed, and then hid her body in the septic tank.
The verdict concludes a four-year judicial process during which the case was transferred three times.
