A starving mother monkey clutching her baby emerged from the forest and sat by the roadside in Habiganj on Monday, indifferent to the crowds and traffic.
The mother held her baby tight while the little one gazed at pedestrians with helpless eyes, both waiting for someone to offer food.
The desperate pair had left the forest in search of sustenance and drew passersby to a halt at the post office boundary wall on Madhabpur Police Station Road. There they remained, clinging to each other, hoping for a kind hand to ease their hunger.
A woman in her fifties bought two bananas from a nearby shop and offered them to the mother monkey, while another pedestrian brought bread. The mother approached without fear, reaching out her hand to accept the food.
In a moving gesture, she fed her baby first and only ate after ensuring her child was satisfied. The scene left onlookers awestruck, with many noting that a mother’s love speaks the same language across all species.
Pedestrian Abdul Ahad said, “Due to the depletion of forests, wild animals are coming to human settlements in search of food. As humans, we should be sympathetic toward them.”
NGO worker Abdul Bashir Raja remarked, “Wildlife is a resource of nature. If we cannot ensure their habitat and food supply, such incidents will increase further. Along with humane behavior toward animals, everyone must come forward for nature conservation.”
Raghunandan Range Assistant Conservator Mohammad Mozammel Hossain Bhuiyan said, “When there is a food crisis for wild animals in the hills, they come to human settlements in search of food. Also, due to storms and rain, they often lose their way and enter residential areas. Forest Department started an initiative to plant forest fruit trees to reduce the food shortage.”
