No Evidence Found in BUET Student Sunny Murder Case

Four years ago, Tariquzzaman Sunny, a student of the Architecture Department at BUET, drowned at the Padma's Mainot Ghat while out with friends. In connection with this incident, his family filed a murder case at the Dohar Police Station in the suburb of the capital. However, investigation has so far found no evidence supporting homicide. The viscera report has confirmed that the victim died from drowning.
The fifth investigating officer of the case, Nasir Uddin, sought approval to submit a final report citing a "factual error" and requesting the discharge of the accused. However, higher authorities ordered further investigation. Following this directive, the investigation continues, but the deadline for submitting the report has passed 41 times. Nevertheless, the police have not yet submitted a report to the court.
The case is currently being investigated by the sixth investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Mashiur Rahman of the Kutubpur Naval Police Outpost. He stated, "The investigation is ongoing under the close monitoring of higher authorities. We are trying to conclude the investigation and submit the police report to the court as soon as possible. However, it is not possible to specify exactly how many more days it will take."
On June 1, Mashiur Rahman appeared in court and submitted a progress report. The report mentioned that during the investigation, the fifth investigating officer (Sub-Inspector) Md. Nasir Uddin found that based on the evidence, including the victim Tariquzzaman Sunny’s body's inquest report, autopsy, viscera report, and the overall circumstances, the charges under Penal Code sections 302/34 were not prima facie established against the accused. The incident appeared to involve a factual error.
Subsequently, a memorandum of evidence was submitted to seek approval from higher authorities to file a final report citing factual error and requesting the discharge of the accused. However, higher authorities ordered further investigation into the case. The last date for submitting the investigation report was set for July 2, but the police were unable to submit it that day. A new date of August 3 has now been fixed for submitting the report.
The accused in the case are: Shariful Hossain, Shakil Ahmed, Sejan Ahmed, Md. Rubel, Md. Sajib, Md. Nuruzzaman, Md. Nasir, Md. Maruf, Md. Ashraful Alam, Md. Jahangir Hossain Liton, Md. Noman, Md. Zahid, ATM Shahriar Momin, Md. Maruful Haque, and Rokonuzzaman aka Jitu. All the accused are currently on bail.
Regarding the delay, the court remarked, "Since they (the police) have been investigating for a long time, let them finish for now. We are awaiting that investigation report. We will take further steps after receiving the report."
Sunny's elder brother, Md. Hasanuzzaman, said, "I now stay in Sunny's room. His clothes are still kept as they were. Books and notebooks are neatly arranged on the table. His laptop is packed in his bag. However, I don't keep any pictures of Sunny in the room. Since he is no longer with us, we have kept his image in our hearts. Mother always talks about Sunny. None of us are well without him."
