The water level of the Dudhkumar River in Kurigram’s Bhurungamari upazila continues to rise due to upstream hill runoff from India, cutting through the region. In the past 24 hours, the river has risen by 67 centimeters and is now flowing just 11 centimeters below the danger mark.
According to the Kurigram Water Development Board, at 6 pm on Sunday, the water level at the Pateshwari point was recorded at 29.49 meters, up from 28.82 meters at the same time the previous day. The river’s danger level has been set at 29.60 meters.
As water enters chars and low-lying areas in the river basin, residents fear flooding. Many also remain anxious about possible river erosion.
Locals living along the Dudhkumar River, including Muidul, Faridul, and Riajul, said that at the current rate of rise, char areas could be submerged within a day or two, raising fears of flooding.
Kurigram Water Development Board Executive Engineer Rakibul Hasan said river levels across the district may continue to rise over the next 72 hours, potentially inundating low-lying areas and triggering a short-term flood situation.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Amrit Debnath said an emergency control room has been opened to handle the flood situation. Union Parishad chairmen have been instructed to stay in contact with the control room, while dry food and medical supplies have been kept ready.
