Train services on the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar route resumed on Sunday after being suspended for five days.
The route returned to normal operation with the departure of the Tourist Express at 1:45 pm after repair work was completed following the recession of floodwater from the railway tracks. The resumption has ended several days of uncertainty for passengers on the route.
At around 12:45 pm on Tuesday, the same Tourist Express (815), bound for Cox’s Bazar from Dhaka, became stranded in the Sholoshahar-Janalihat section after continuous heavy rainfall submerged the railway tracks under 20 inches of water.
At the same time, the train remained stranded for nearly four hours after a tree was uprooted and fell onto the railway tracks in the Forest Gate area. After an 11 hour ordeal, railway authorities were forced to cancel the train’s journey at around 11 pm that night.
After the water receded, repair work on the railway tracks was completed, and the entire route was reopened on Sunday afternoon with the departure of the same Tourist Express.
Passengers are also viewing the development as symbolic, as the very train that had been stranded midway on Tuesday resumed its journey normally on Sunday.
The restoration of train services after five days has brought relief to passengers and to the thousands of tourists and travelers who rely on the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar route for their daily transportation needs.
