Egg, fish prices soar as vegetables offer some relief

Eggs, fish, and chicken are selling at steep prices in Dhaka. For over a month, the price of eggs has remained at Tk 150 or more per dozen. There is no relief in the fish market either, and the prices of flour and sugar have also increased. However, vegetable prices have decreased slightly.
The picture was observed on Thursday, during visits to Karwan Bazar, Badda, and Mohakhali markets. According to conversations with sellers, Tilapia fish is selling for Tk 250-260 per kilogram, Pangas for Tk 230-250, Rui and Katla for Tk 380-420, and shrimp for Tk 1,000-1,300.
The price of Hilsa is also quite high, with Hilsa weighing 900 grams to 1 kilogram selling for Tk 2,250-2,600 per kilogram.
In the chicken and egg markets, broiler chicken is selling for Tk 180-200 per kilogram, and Sonali chicken for Tk 300-320. The price of eggs is Tk 150 or more per dozen, whereas a dozen eggs was previously within Tk 130-140. Beef is selling for Tk 800-850 per kilogram.
The price of flour has also risen, with packaged two-kilogram flour selling for Tk 130. Just three to four weeks ago, the same flour was sold for Tk 120. The price of loose flour has increased to Tk 50, which was previously Tk 45.
An upward trend is also visible in the sugar market, where sugar is selling in the retail market for Tk 120-125 per kilogram. About a month ago, this sugar was sold for Tk 110 per kilogram.
However, some relief has returned to the vegetable market, with most vegetables available within Tk 60-70. A month ago, the prices of many vegetables had crossed Tk 100 per kilogram. Now, pointed gourd and okra are selling for Tk 50-60, snake gourd and sponge gourd for Tk 60, cucumber for Tk 50-60, and bitter gourd for Tk 80 per kilogram.
Yardlong bean and ribbed gourd are selling for Tk 70-80, papaya for Tk 30-40, taro root for Tk 80, sweet pumpkin for Tk 55-60, green chili for Tk 120-160, eggplant for Tk 80-100, tomato for Tk 100-120, and carrot for Tk 100-120 per kilogram.
Bottle gourd is selling for Tk 60-80 per piece, ash gourd for Tk 50-60 per piece, and green banana is selling for Tk 40-50 per hali (four pieces).
On the other hand, there is not much change in the prices of onions and potatoes. Depending on quality, onion is selling for Tk 50-55 per kilogram, and potato is selling for Tk 25-30 per kilogram.
