Trading declines despite rise in indices

Despite a rise in the indices, trading volume and share prices of most companies declined on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE). On Thursday, the last trading day of the week, the market ended with the indices rising while total trading volume declined and share prices of a large number of companies fell.
At the end of the day, the DSE’s benchmark index DSEX rose by 1 point to 5,662 points. Meanwhile, the Shariah index rose by 2 points to 1,138 points and the DSE 30 index rose by 15 points to 2,140 points.
Of the 389 companies and mutual funds traded in the market, share prices rose for 127, fell for 226 and remained unchanged for 36. Total trading on the DSE stood at Tk 720 crore 92 lakh, down Tk 10 crore 25 lakh from Tk 731 crore 7 lakh on the previous day.
Meanwhile, the overall index of the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), CASPI, rose by 14 points to 15,172 points. Of the 173 companies traded there, share prices rose for 65, fell for 86 and remained unchanged for 22. Total trading stood at Tk 15 crore 23 lakh.
Malek Spinning Mills PLC topped the DSE trading list with shares worth Tk 51 crore 40 lakh changing hands. Sharp Industries ranked second with shares worth Tk 34 crore 58 lakh traded while Saiham Cotton Mills ranked third with shares worth Tk 34 crore 33 lakh traded.
Other companies on the top trading list were Saiham Textile Mills, Beximco Pharmaceuticals, Paramount Textile, Taufika Foods and Lovello Ice Cream, IPDC Finance, Techno Drugs and Karnaphuli Insurance PLC.
Saiham Textile Mills Limited topped the list of companies with the biggest share price declines with its shares falling 9.95 percent. Saiham Cotton ranked second with a 9.43 percent decline while Sharp Industries ranked third with a 9.24 percent decline.
Other companies on the list of biggest decliners included Meghna Pet Industries, Apex Spinning, Grameen One: Scheme Two, Information Services Network, Taufika Foods and Lovello Ice Cream, Tung Hai Knitting and Meghna Condensed Milk.
Meanwhile, Pragati Life Insurance PLC topped the list of gainers with its share price rising 7.43 percent. Bangladesh National Insurance ranked second with a 6.82 percent rise while BD Thai Aluminium ranked third with a 6.25 percent increase.
Other companies on the list of top gainers were Shinepukur Ceramics, The Peninsula Chittagong, Takaful Islami Insurance, Bangladesh Autocars, Desh Garments, Trust Islami Life Insurance and Anwar Galvanizing.
