The water level of the Teesta River rose above the danger mark at around 8 pm on Thursday due to heavy rainfall and a surge of water from upstream. At that time, the river’s water level at the Teesta Barrage Point of the irrigation project was recorded at 52.16 meters. The danger level at this point is 52.15 meters, meaning water is flowing one centimeter above the danger mark.
Nurul Islam, the water gauge reader at the barrage point, said the river’s water level began rising mainly from 3 pm on Thursday. At that time, the water level was 51.94 centimeters. At 7 pm, the water reached the danger level and was flowing at 52.15 centimeters. As rainfall continues upstream, the situation is being closely monitored.
Amitabh Chowdhury, executive engineer of the Dalia Water Development Board, said the river’s water level is fluctuating depending on the flow of water coming from upstream. However, since 8 pm, water has been flowing one centimeter above the danger mark. If heavy rainfall occurs again upstream, the water level may rise further. To keep the situation under control, all 44 gates of the barrage have been kept open.
