Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU) has expelled 66 students following an investigation into a violent campus clash, vandalism, and violations of university discipline.
The decision was confirmed Wednesday through an official order signed by Registrar Prof. Dr. Md. Abu Hasan.
According to the order, the incident occurred on May 21, when more than 100 students allegedly marched from Shaheed Abrar Fahad Hall to Shaheed Nur Hossain Hall carrying sticks and locally made weapons. They were accused of launching a sudden attack on an assistant proctor and students residing in the hall.
Following the investigation, disciplinary action was taken against 66 students. However, the university said all students have been given the opportunity to defend themselves before the penalties become final.
The university imposed four levels of punishment based on the severity of the offenses.
Eight students were expelled from their residence halls for six months, issued written warnings, and fined Tk 2,000 for disorderly conduct.
Six students were suspended from academic activities for one semester, expelled from their residence halls, and fined Tk 5,000 for carrying weapons and creating panic on campus.
Forty-six students were suspended from academic activities for two semesters, expelled from their residence halls, and fined Tk 10,000 for vandalizing university property while carrying weapons.
Six students received lifetime expulsion from all academic activities for allegedly attacking Assistant Proctor Md. Mobinul Islam.
The students permanently expelled are Md. Naimur Rahman Durjoy and Sakir Mahmud of the Agricultural and Industrial Engineering and Economics departments (2022 batch); Md. Saurav Ahmed of the Electronic and Communication Engineering Department (2023 batch); Md. Dhaka University Proctor Prof. Dr. Nausher One said the disciplinary measures were imposed based on the recommendations of the investigation committee.
