Authorities have suspended all travel to Sajek Valley, one of Bangladesh’s most popular tourist destinations, due to the heightened risk of landslides following days of heavy rainfall.
The Rangamati District Administration announced Tuesday evening that the tourist destination will remain closed indefinitely starting Tuesday evening to ensure public safety.
In an emergency notice signed by Deputy Commissioner Nazma Ashrafi, the district administration said the decision was made based on the latest weather forecast issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s Storm Warning Center and the continuing heavy rains across the hill district.
The notice said persistent rainfall has triggered landslides and disrupted transportation in several parts of Rangamati, creating significant safety concerns for tourists and residents.
Under the directive, all tourist attractions, waterfalls, hill trails, remote areas, and other high-risk locations in Sajek Valley will remain off-limits to visitors, tour operators, and the general public until further notice.
The district administration also urged people traveling within Rangamati to exercise caution and strictly follow official safety instructions.
According to a statement sent to the media, heavy rainfall continues across all upazilas of Rangamati. Several areas have already experienced landslides, while fallen retaining walls and uprooted trees have caused additional hazards. The Kaptai–Chattogram Highway was closed for nearly six hours on Tuesday due to the adverse weather before traffic was restored.
