A hospital corridor echoed with cries as a father walked through, holding his newborn’s lifeless body swaddled in cloth against his chest. The father, in shock, spoke incoherently, saying the child he hoped to raise now lay lifeless in his arms.
The father, who came from Munshiganj, told reporters, “They were supposed to discharge my baby today. At night, my wife asked the nurses about the baby’s condition, but they did not respond. At dawn, while I was offering prayers, my wife called me. I rushed back and tried to move the baby to the ICU. Before we could take the baby, they processed an advance bill, and we bought medicines. But by then, my baby had already died. They did not inform me.”
He alleged that the hospital’s negligence led to the death of his child. He said the hospital charged him in phases, and the total cost reached Tk 30,000.
He further said, “After the baby was taken to the ICU, the newborns started dying one after another. So far, 12 to 13 have died. All the babies in my child’s ward were previously stable. Doctors did not explain why this happened.”
Not one or two, but six newborns died at Ad-Din Hospital in Dhaka. None of them had been named. None had seen daylight. Parents alleged that the babies died after the air conditioning system was turned off.
