Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Bomb Disposal Unit has arrived at Ad-Din Medical College Hospital in Moghbazar, Dhaka, to investigate the cause and mystery behind the deaths of six newborns.
On Wednesday afternoon, a team from the DMP Bomb Disposal Unit arrived at Ad-Din Hospital. The team is also examining whether any toxic gas had spread in the area.
A member of the team, speaking on condition of anonymity, said they had been sent on instructions from senior officials. “We will conduct tests using advanced devices in the room where the newborns died. It will be confirmed after investigation whether any toxic gas spread, and if so, what type of gas it was and in what quantity,” he said.
Earlier, around 11 am, the Crime Scene Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrived at the location and collected various samples.
A visit to the site showed that the CID crime scene team entered the hospital’s post-operative room and collected different pieces of evidence and samples. They worked there for about an hour.
Another member of the team, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said they are collecting samples considering all possible scenarios. “Through forensic tests, we will try to determine the actual cause of these innocent children’s deaths,” he said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Ramna Division, Sheikh Jahidul Islam, said, “So far, we have confirmed the deaths of six children. However, the cause of death is still unknown. A CID expert team is collecting samples. The exact cause will be known after the investigation.”
After visiting the site, DG of the Directorate General of Health Services, Professor Pravath Chandra Biswas, said five more children are currently admitted to the hospital’s NICU. They are under treatment. However, he did not provide detailed information about their current condition.
