Court rejects case against Dr. Yunus and 26 others

A court has rejected a petition seeking to file a case against 27 people, including Chief Adviser of the interim government Dr. Muhammad Yunus and top leaders of the National Citizens Party (NCP), over allegations of vandalism and arson at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence at Dhanmondi 32.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order after a hearing on Thursday. The petition was rejected under Section 203 of the Code of Criminal Procedure because there were insufficient grounds to take cognizance of the case.
Earlier, a 44-year-old woman named Tamanna Chowdhury Priyanka filed the petition. The court recorded her statement. Following the hearing, the petition was rejected because there were insufficient grounds to proceed with the case.
Besides Dr. Yunus, the petition sought to name former Law Adviser Asif Nazrul, former Home Adviser Lieutenant General (retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, former Adviser for Environment and Disaster Management Dr. Rizwana Hasan, Dr. Yunus’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, former Cultural Affairs Adviser Mustafa Sarwar Farooki, former Adviser and current Member of Parliament Nahid Islam, former Advisers Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan and Mahfuz Alam as accused.
The petition also named Members of Parliament Akhtar Hossain and Abdul Hannan Masud, Hasnat Abdullah, NCP leaders Sarjis Alam, Samantha Sharmin, Nusrat Tabassum, Dr. Tasnim Jara, Nasiruddin Patwary, Ariful Islam Adib, Saleh Uddin Sifat, Pinaki Bhattacharya, Elias Hossain, Kanak Sarwar, retired Colonel Nurnabi, Tahreema Jannat (Suravi), bulldozer supplier Md. Milon, Fahim Al Chowdhury and Abul Kalam Azad.
The petition also sought to include 300 to 500 unidentified people as accused.
