At least seven Palestinian civilians were killed in separate Israeli airstrikes in Gaza City. The attacks targeted a residential building and a civilian vehicle, leaving many others injured. Israel carried out the strikes on Friday, which marked the 78th anniversary of the Nakba, or “catastrophe.”
According to claims from Tel Aviv, the strikes were aimed at Hamas’s armed wing commander Izz al-Din al-Haddad. In a statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz said Israel had targeted “one of the key architects” of the October 7 attack. However, the statement did not confirm whether al-Haddad was killed.
Hamas did not comment on the claim, and Al Jazeera said it could not independently verify Israel’s assertion.
Citing sources, Anadolu Agency reported that three Palestinians were killed when Israel launched a missile strike on a civilian vehicle. Meanwhile, four people were killed in an attack on a residential building in the Rimal area of western Gaza City. At least 45 others were injured in the strikes, including women and a child among the dead.
Eyewitnesses said at least four missiles were used in the attack, and a fire spread through the damaged building afterward.
The latest strikes coincided with the 78th anniversary of the Nakba. On this day in 1948, around 750,000 Palestinians were displaced during the war that led to the establishment of Israel. Palestinians commemorate the day as the Nakba, or the great catastrophe.
