Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced Monday that $6 billion in frozen Iranian assets will be returned to the country through Qatar. He also claimed that sanctions on Iran's oil and petrochemical sectors have been lifted under a recent peace agreement, calling the development a great victory for the Iranian people.
Pezeshkian made the remarks after meeting Grand Ayatollah Shubairi Zanjani during a visit to the holy city of Qom.
He said Iran has a total of $12 billion in frozen assets held in Qatar, with the first $6 billion set to be released in the initial phase. The government, he added, is continuing efforts to recover the remaining funds.
According to Pezeshkian, the release of the assets and the easing of sanctions were finalized during negotiations held in Switzerland and under a memorandum of understanding signed in Islamabad.
The Iranian president said the country remained united throughout the recent conflict despite the killings of senior leaders, cabinet ministers, military commanders, prominent figures and even schoolchildren. He claimed that the United States and Israel sought to weaken Iran through economic pressure, but the resilience of the Iranian people had thwarted those efforts.
Reiterating Iran's position on its nuclear program, Pezeshkian said the country does not seek to develop nuclear weapons. He assured the international community that Iran's nuclear activities would continue only within its declared policies and according to the country's legitimate needs.
He also said the government has launched a post-agreement reconstruction plan, including expanded food subsidy credit programs and other support measures for the public following the peace deal.
