The first knockout match of the World Cup was heading towards extra time. But Stephen Eustáquio would not allow that. The Canadian captain's solitary goal secured the first win in this edition's knockout round for Canada.
By defeating South Africa 1-0, the co-hosts advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time in their history. They will face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the quarter-finals.

Throughout the match in Inglewood, California, Canada dominated. They were ahead in possession, attacks, and goal-scoring opportunities. However, their finishing repeatedly let them down, and South Africa's defence stood firm.

Canada could have taken the lead as early as the 44th minute of the first half. From a corner, Bombito's header beat goalkeeper Williams, but Modiba cleared the ball off the goal line. He kept his team level until the break, saving a certain goal.

Canada maintained their attacking momentum in the second half. In the 65th minute, Oluwaseyi's solo effort failed to beat the goalkeeper, but on the rebound, Jonathan David had a chance in front of goal. However, Mbokazi incredibly raced back and headed the ball clear from what seemed an empty net. It will be remembered as one of the best defensive moments of the match from the South African defender.

But all that resistance was ultimately not enough. After 90 minutes, deep into stoppage time, in the second minute of added time, Canadian captain Eustáquio fired a stunning shot from outside the box into the net. That single goal sealed a historic victory for Canada in World Cup knockout stages.

South Africa earned plaudits for their fighting spirit but were largely ineffective in attack. Failing to find the net, their World Cup campaign ended in their very first knockout match. Meanwhile, the home supporters erupted in celebration as Canada secured their Round of 16 ticket.

In World Cup history, this was only the third knockout match featuring two teams both ranked outside the top 30 in the FIFA rankings. Canada are ranked 32nd, South Africa 54th.

It was all Canada throughout the match. Continuous attacks, goal-scoring chances, missed opportunities—everything was Canada. But the one thing they needed most, the co-hosts were not getting. A goal!
That goal came after regulation time. In the second minute of stoppage time, captain Eustáquio struck from outside the box. His goal secured the win for Canada in their first knockout match of the World Cup.

01:52 – Canada Denied Again in the 65th Minute

This goal should have been scored. But South African defender Mbokazi became his team's saviour at the right moment. His flying clearance stopped the ball from going into an empty net, keeping South Africa's fortunes alive against Canada.

In the 65th minute, Canada's Oluwaseyi burst through on goal but could not beat goalkeeper Williams. He took a shot which deflected off the keeper and looped into the air. It was heading towards the goal, but at the last moment, Mbokazi sprinted in with incredible speed and cleared it. The defender saved a certain goal and kept South Africa in the match.

01:33 – Canada's Misfortune: A Goal That Wasn't

In the 44th minute of the first half between South Africa and Canada, from a corner kick, Canada's number 15, Bombito, headed the ball from close range. The goalkeeper failed to hold it, but South Africa's number 6, Modiba, cleared the header off the goal line. Canada were denied a sure goal. The first half ended goalless.
