Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump held an extensive telephone conversation on Wednesday. The discussion covered a wide range of critical issues, with the conflict in the Middle East and the Ukraine crisis taking center stage.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed that during the nearly 90-minute call, the two leaders conducted a detailed review of the ongoing wars in the Middle East and the situation in Ukraine.
Ushakov informed reporters that the conversation was professional in nature. The presidents placed particular emphasis on the current state of affairs regarding Iran and the Persian Gulf region. Putin reportedly welcomed Trump’s decision to extend the ceasefire with Iran.
The Russian President noted that extending the ceasefire would create a necessary window for dialogue and assist in stabilizing the overall global situation.
However, Putin issued a stern warning, stating that if the United States and Israel choose to return to military action, the consequences would be catastrophic—not just for Iran and its neighbors, but for the entire international community. Putin also reaffirmed Russia's commitment to supporting diplomatic efforts to resolve the Middle East crisis.
Meanwhile, in Washington, President Trump told reporters that he had a "very good" talk with Putin. He claimed that the conversation focused more heavily on the Ukraine issue than on Iran.
Trump stated that while Putin expressed a desire to help end the Iran-Israel conflict, he urged the Russian leader to first halt the aggression in Ukraine.
Regarding Ukraine, Ushakov noted that Putin provided a briefing on the current battlefield situation at Trump's request. Putin claimed that Russian forces currently hold a strategically advantageous position.
Both leaders were critical of the Zelenskyy administration's conduct, alleging that Kyiv is prolonging the conflict due to provocation from European nations.
As the discussion concluded, Putin proposed a temporary ceasefire to mark the upcoming Victory Day celebrations on May 9th. Trump reportedly expressed active support for this initiative. (Source: The Moscow Times)
