At least 13 people have been killed in new Pakistani airstrikes in Afghanistan, according to Taliban authorities. Another 14 people were injured.
Taliban chief spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said, citing the Associated Press (AP), that the airstrikes targeted Afghanistan’s Khost, Kunduz, and Paktika provinces.
Among the dead were 11 children, one woman, and one elderly person.
Pakistan has not yet acknowledged carrying out the strikes.
Details about the intensity of the attacks and the exact cause remain unclear.
The latest strikes come amid several months of rising tensions between the two countries, which have already engaged in deadly clashes.
Since late February, cross-border attacks between Afghanistan and Pakistan have killed hundreds of people. A brief ceasefire was later brokered with China’s mediation.
On April 27, Pakistan violated the ceasefire by launching strikes in Afghanistan, killing at least seven people and injuring 85. Those attacks reportedly targeted a university and residential civilian areas.
Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of harboring militants, particularly the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which frequently carries out attacks inside Pakistan. While the TTP is separate from the Afghan Taliban, the two groups are considered allies. Afghanistan has denied the allegations.
The Taliban have been in power in Afghanistan since the withdrawal of US troops in 2021.
