No Breakthrough Yet in US-Iran Talks, Tehran Signals Delay

Esmaeil Baghaei
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran and Washington have reached a limited “understanding” on several issues, but he ruled out any near-term agreement.
Speaking at a press conference in Tehran on Monday, He said there was no guarantee that the United States would honor its commitments.
Baghaei said Iran’s nuclear program is not currently part of the negotiations. He also reiterated Tehran’s position that a complete end to hostilities must be achieved in all areas, including Lebanon.
He said that Iran wants discussions on specific aspects of its nuclear program to be postponed until an official end to the conflict is declared.
Baghaei said the position of the Trump administration has shown repeated changes.
He said positions can change completely within just a few hours and often contradict one another, adding that this creates problems for any negotiation process.
He rejected describing Iran’s plan to charge for the use of the Strait of Hormuz as a toll. Instead, he described it as a fee for various services, including maritime navigation and environmental protection.
He further said that any responsible country would welcome the establishment of a reliable and predictable system for transit and maritime operations through the Strait of Hormuz.
