Group of Seven (G7) wealthy nations launched a summit on Monday at the French lakeside resort of Evian-les-Bains.
This high-stakes meeting marks five decades since the group’s formation, occurring as the war in Ukraine and Iran, global economic instability, and the rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) dominate the international agenda.
France holds the rotating presidency, having succeeded Canada in 2026. The core membership - comprising the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan - is joined by the European Union.
In an effort to bolster multilateralism, the summit also welcomes the leaders of India, South Korea, Kenya, and Brazil as invited guests.
A primary focus of the summit remains the recent framework agreement between the US and Iran to end their hostilities. G7 leaders are seeking specific details of the accord before the official signing this Friday, particularly concerning the restoration of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump has confirmed the Hormuz will reopen on Friday and has ordered an end to the US naval blockade on Iranian ports. To further discuss regional security and Iran’s nuclear and ballistic programmes, the leaders of Egypt, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates will join the deliberations.
Simultaneously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in Evian-les-Bains to advocate for continued Western unity as the war with Russia enters its fifth year. Zelensky has proposed face-to-face negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin to conclude the conflict.
He is reportedly urging European nations to assume a more prominent role in the peace process, amidst concerns that the US remains preoccupied with the situation in Iran.
The summit is also addressing deep-seated global economic imbalances. France has summarised these tensions by stating that China produces too much, the US consumes too much, and Europe invests too little. While the West expresses alarm over China’s record trade surplus, Beijing continues to reject claims that its exporters benefit from unfair state subsidies.
In the tech sphere, the G7 has invited prominent executives, including OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, to discuss the opportunities and risks presented by AI. The agenda also includes the protection of children online and digital infrastructure.
Moreover, G7 leaders are expected to express their determination to address the massive debt burdens crushing developing and emerging market nations, although concrete financial commitments remain unconfirmed.
