A fire broke out on an Iranian cargo vessel after a US strike late Thursday near the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. Five sailors remain missing and 10 others have been injured, according to an Iranian official cited by Anadolu Agency.
Mohammad Radmehr, governor of Minab County in southern Iran, told the country’s Mehr News Agency that a civilian cargo vessel owned by residents of Kolahi area in Minab came under US attack near the strategic waterway.
He said the vessel caught fire in waters off the Minab coast following the strike.
Radmehr stated that 15 sailors were on board at the time of the incident.
He added that the injured sailors were taken to hospital, while local teams and rescue workers are trying to determine the condition of the remaining crew members.
The Iranian official described the targeting of a commercial vessel as a sign of the adversary’s “desperation”.
Earlier, Iranian media reported that the US Navy had struck vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, which Washington claimed were missile-carrying boats of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). However, Iranian outlets later said the vessels were civilian fishing and cargo ships.
