The US Supreme Court has struck down President Donald Trump’s effort to limit birthright citizenship, dealing a major blow to his anti-immigration agenda.
In a 6-3 decision issued Tuesday, the court upheld a lower court ruling that had blocked Trump’s executive order. Plaintiffs challenging the order argued that it violated the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, which grants citizenship to people born in the United States and subject to its jurisdiction.
Trump signed the executive order on his first day back in office for a second term last year as part of a broader effort to tighten controls on both legal and illegal immigration. The order sought to deny citizenship to children born in the United States if neither parent was a US citizen nor a lawful permanent resident, commonly known as a green card holder.
This marks the second time this year that the Supreme Court has blocked a major Trump administration policy. In February, the court also rejected his initiative to impose global tariffs.
Critics have argued that Trump’s immigration policies reflect racial and religious discrimination.
The ruling comes just days before the United States marks Independence Day on July 4 and celebrates the 250th anniversary of its founding.
Before the decision, some experts warned that if the executive order took effect, the citizenship status of nearly 250,000 children born in the United States each year could face legal uncertainty. They also said millions of families might have been required to provide additional documentation to prove the citizenship of their newborn children.
