USA's 250 Years: External Pressure vs. Internal Struggle

After maintaining longstanding leadership in global politics, economics, and technology, the United States enters its 250th year of independence facing a complex reality. On one hand, its influence as one of the world's most powerful nations remains intact; on the other, the country has increasingly reached a stage of harsh self-criticism regarding internal political divisions, democratic crises, social inequality, and questions over its global leadership.

In an analysis published on the occasion of US Independence Day, journalist David Ignatius wrote that America's current position reflects both glory and decline simultaneously. The ideological state born from the Declaration of Independence in 1776 now faces various tests of reality two and a half centuries later.

According to him, today's America has transformed into a far more unequal society than the republic of farmers and entrepreneurs envisioned by the founding fathers. The gap between rich and poor has widened, political polarization has reached extreme levels, and public trust in state institutions is lower than at any previous time.

The analysis stated that the country's political system is becoming increasingly incapable of effective decision-making. Concerns over the quality of the education system are growing, student outcomes are on a downward trend, and social divisions have reached a point where many perceive the United States not as a single nation, but as a country of two distinct political and cultural realities.

According to David Ignatius, amid these crises, America's greatest strength remains its people. Ordinary Americans still possess some of the world's best innovative power, initiative, and resilience to bounce back from failure. US leadership in technology, film, science, research, and creative industries remains exemplary for many countries.

However, significant shifts are also evident in America's position on the international stage. Recalling a recent visit to Thailand, the author noted that countries which were once entirely within Washington's strategic orbit are now pursuing a policy of balancing between the United States and China. Advertisements for Chinese electric cars on the streets of Bangkok, the large number of Chinese tourists, and their commercial presence are clear symbols of this change.

In discussions with international analysts, he further observed that many countries now view the United States as a less reliable partner than before. Particularly in recent years, frequent changes in foreign policy, the imposition of trade tariffs, and uncertainty in international cooperation have created new concerns among allied nations.

The analysis states that while the United States adopts protectionist economic policies, other countries around the world are building new free trade blocs. As a result, globalization has not stopped; rather, it is restructuring itself in the new reality. Multinational institutions are no longer unilaterally envisioning a US-dependent future but are instead adopting multi-faceted global strategies.

Drawing from conversations with many people in Southeast Asia, Ignatius notes that while they are concerned about China's growing influence, they can no longer place the same trust in the United States as before. Currently, Japan's image as the most reliable developed nation has strengthened in their eyes, as they view Japan as a stable and predictable partner.

However, amid this criticism, the author believes that America's greatest strength lies in its capacity for self-criticism. The country has faced numerous crises throughout its history and has always bounced back. From the Civil War and the Great Depression to world wars and political turmoil—America has reinvented itself every single time.

He reminds us that the U.S. Declaration of Independence is not merely a political document; it was a commitment to human values. The ideals that all people are created equal and that life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are fundamental rights remain the country's greatest strength.

Therefore, on its 250th Independence Day, the United States is, on one hand, celebrating its remarkable achievements, while on the other, confronting tough questions about the future. Maintaining global leadership, strengthening democratic institutions, and rebuilding public trust—these three challenges will determine America's path in the days ahead. Within this dual reality of strength and crisis, a new chapter for the superpower is beginning.
