A large hilsa fish weighing 2 kilograms and 100 grams was caught in the Bay of Bengal near Kuakata coast in Patuakhali. Now, Hilsha is selling in the open market at Tk 1,30,000 per maund (approximately 37.32 kg), and that the 2-kg fish has fetched Tk 6,825.
The fish was caught on Saturday morning in the net of fisherman Kader Miah, onboard a fishing trawler named "Jolotaranga." It was later brought to the Messrs Anisha Enterprise fish landing center at Alipur, where it was purchased through bidding by local wholesale-retailer Rahman. He said the fish would be sent to Dhaka.
Mehedi Hasan, manager of the Messrs Anisha Enterprise fish market, said that due to its large size, the fish was sold at Tk 1,30,000 per maund. The total selling price for this hilsa, weighing 2 kg 100 grams, came to Tk 6,825.
Fisherman Kader Miah said, "After the 58-day fishing ban ended, we went to sea and cast our nets, and this large hilsa was caught along with other fish. Today, this was the biggest fish on the trawler. I got a good price because it was a large hilsa. Although the quantity of fish in the Bay is relatively low this year, I am still satisfied with what Allah has given."
Apurba Saha, Senior Fisheries Officer of Kalapara Upazila, said, "The capture of large-sized hilsa is good news for fishermen. Large hilsa are being found in coastal areas as well as in the deep sea. Hilsa production is gradually increasing. I hope that if supply increases further in the coming days, market prices will also become more affordable."
