The second and nearly full-fledged monsoon rain band of the year, named 'Dhara', is approaching thid deltaic country. Under its influence, there is a possibility of rainfall across approximately 90 to 100 percent of the country, to varying degrees, for nine consecutive days from today, Sunday (July 5), to July 13.
The private weather organization Bangladesh Weather Observation Team Limited disclosed this information in a forecast issued on Sunday night.
The forecast stated that this rain band will first become active over the southern part of the country and may gradually spread across the entire country. The rain band is expected to be most powerful and active between July 7 and July 11.
During the 'Dhara' precipitation band period, such weather is expected to be most active in the Sylhet, Chattogram, Barishal, and Mymensingh divisions. Additionally, it is likely to be quite active in the Khulna and Dhaka divisions, while remaining moderately active in the Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions.
According to the forecast, continuous rainfall in the highly active zones may fulfill the irrigation water demand for about 60-70 percent of the country. During this period, the sky will remain cloudy for most of the time, and rain-bearing clouds are likely to move from the south and southwest towards the north and northeast.
During rainfall, there may be mild to moderate lightning and gusty winds in some areas. However, there is no likelihood of hailstorms or nor'westers during this spell.
While the risk of major flooding during this rain band is low, temporary waterlogging may occur in low-lying areas of the Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions. Additionally, there is a risk of flash floods in extremely flood-prone low-lying areas along riverbanks.
Waterlogging may also occur in coastal districts, including Bandarban, as well as various other low-lying areas of the country.
Furthermore, due to heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the upstream Indian territories (Assam and Meghalaya) of the Sylhet division, there is a strong possibility of flash floods in the border areas of Bangladesh. The forecast also warned of a significant risk of landslides in the Chattogram Hill Tracts due to excessive rainfall.
With the activation of this rain band, the ongoing heatwave conditions across the country are expected to subside. The weather in most places will be quite comfortable. However, during dry spells between rains, temperatures may temporarily rise to around 36 degrees Celsius in one or two places in the Khulna, Rangpur, and Rajshahi divisions.
Currently, a low-pressure area exists over the northwestern Bay of Bengal, which may move inland. Due to this low pressure and strong monsoon winds, the northern Bay of Bengal is likely to remain quite rough.
