Trump’s Lawsuit Against the Washington Post Dismissed

The lawsuit was filed against The Washington Post
A federal court in Florida has dismissed a $3.8 billion defamation lawsuit filed by Trump Media & Technology Group against The Washington Post. The case marks another setback for US President Donald Trump in legal battles against news organizations.
The lawsuit stemmed from a report published by The Washington Post in 2023. The report said that a trust linked to a pornography-friendly bank could acquire a stake in Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social. Trump Media claimed the report was defamatory and part of a conspiracy to damage the company’s reputation.
US District Judge Thomas Barber said in his ruling that Trump Media had failed to meet the strict legal standard required in defamation cases involving public figures or organizations.
He said Trump Media had not presented any evidence from which a jury could clearly and convincingly conclude that The Washington Post had published the report with actual malice.
Under US law, ‘actual malice’ means that a news organization knowingly published false information or published it recklessly without verifying its accuracy.
In court, The Washington Post said that the report’s author, Drew Harwell, had conducted an in-depth investigation into the matter and was confident in the accuracy of the information in the report at the time of publication.
Following the ruling, a spokesperson for the newspaper said they were pleased with the court’s decision and would review the written ruling once it is released.
Meanwhile, Trump Media said in a statement that it believes the question of whether the report’s false information constituted a legal offense should have been decided by a jury. The company said it would consider appealing the ruling and would continue its efforts to hold the media accountable.
Last May, The Washington Post published a correction saying that two pieces of information in the original report were incorrect. However, the newspaper said the claims had been made based on the information available to it at the time the report was published.
The ruling adds another case to the list of unsuccessful lawsuits filed by Trump and Trump Media against news organizations. Trump Media, which operates Truth Social, continues to face ongoing financial losses and is still engaged in legal battles against several major news outlets.
