Water levels in two rivers across Bangladesh are currently flowing above the danger mark. The Sangu River at the Bandarban station in Bandarban and the Matamuhuri River at the Lama station in Cox's Bazar have both crossed their danger levels.
The information was provided on Wednesday by an assistant engineer at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
According to the FFWC, some extremely heavy rainfall was recorded over the past 24 hours in the Rangpur, Mymensingh, Sylhet and Chattogram divisions. During the same period, heavy to very heavy rainfall also occurred in the Indian states of Meghalaya, West Bengal, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh.
Weather forecasts indicate that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue in these areas over the next three days, followed by moderate to heavy rainfall for another two days.
Flood Situation May Deteriorate in Chattogram Division
Over the past 24 hours, water levels in the Gomti, Muhuri, Feni, Selonia, Halda, Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers have increased. These rivers are expected to rise more rapidly over the next three days.
As a result, flood conditions in Bandarban and Cox's Bazar districts may worsen within the next 24 to 72 hours. During the same period, river levels at several locations in Feni, Chattogram and Khagrachhari may exceed the danger level, triggering short-term flooding in adjacent low-lying areas.
There is also a risk of temporary inundation in some low-lying riverside areas of Lakshmipur and Noakhali districts.
River Levels Also Rising in Sylhet and Mymensingh
Water levels in the Manu, Dhalai, Khowai, Kangsha, Sarigowain, Someshwari, Jadukata and Bhugai rivers have increased over the past 24 hours, and the rising trend is expected to continue over the next three days.
Within the next 24 to 72 hours, these rivers may cross the danger levels at some locations in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Netrokona, Sherpur and Mymensingh districts, raising the possibility of short-term flooding in nearby low-lying areas.
Teesta May Cross Danger Level in Rangpur
In the Rangpur region, the Teesta River has risen over the past 24 hours. Although water levels in the Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers remain stable for now, they are expected to rise rapidly over the next three days.
Within the next 24 to 48 hours, the Teesta River may rise above the danger level. As a result, short-term flooding may occur in low-lying riverside areas of Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat and Rangpur districts.
In addition, within the next 72 hours, the Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers may reach the warning level in Lalmonirhat and Kurigram districts, increasing the risk of temporary inundation in some low-lying areas.
Surma and Kushiyara Rivers May Reach Warning Level
Over the past 24 hours, the water level of the Surma River has increased, while the Kushiyara River has remained nearly stable. However, both rivers are expected to rise rapidly over the next three days.
During this period, rivers in the Surma-Kushiyara basin in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts may reach the warning level. This could lead to temporary waterlogging or flooding in some low-lying areas along the riverbanks.
