Argentina have announced their final 26-man squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup as they aim to defend their title. Head coach Lionel Scaloni has built the team largely on the core that won the Qatar World Cup, while adding multiple options across defense, midfield, and attack. With the joint hosting by Mexico, Canada, and the United States, a positional breakdown offers a clearer view of how the Albiceleste may shape their tactics.
Goalkeepers:
Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martínez remains Argentina’s undisputed first-choice
goalkeeper. The Aston Villa star, who recently won the UEFA Europa League with
the English club, continues to be Scaloni’s preferred option as he was in the
Qatar World Cup. Juan Musso of Atletico Madrid and Gerónimo Rulli of Olympique
Marseille have been named as backup goalkeepers.
Defense:
Scaloni has placed strong emphasis on central defense in shaping his back line.
Cristian Romero (Tottenham), Lisandro Martínez (Manchester United), and
experienced Nicolás Otamendi form the core defensive trio. Leonardo Balerdi of
Olympique Marseille and Facundo Medina are included as backup options, with
Medina also capable of playing as a left-back when required.
On the left flank, Nicolás Tagliafico of Olympique Lyon will shoulder primary responsibility. On the right side, Scaloni has two reliable options in Nahuel Molina of Atletico Madrid and Gonzalo Montiel of River Plate.
Midfield:
To maintain balance between defense and attack, Scaloni has selected seven
midfielders—three in defensive roles and four with more attacking
responsibilities. The defensive midfield group includes Rodrigo De Paul (Inter
Miami), Leandro Paredes (Boca Juniors), and Exequiel Palacios (Bayer
Leverkusen).
For creative and attacking build-up play, Scaloni will rely heavily on Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister and Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández. They will be supported by Chelsea youngster Valentín Barco and Real Betis playmaker Giovani Lo Celso.
Attack:
Argentina’s attacking strength lies in the trio of Lionel Messi, Lautaro
Martínez, and Julián Álvarez. Scaloni has included a total of eight forwards,
making the attack one of the team’s most dangerous areas.
Captain Lionel Messi (Inter Miami) will operate in a free role. Alongside him, Lautaro Martínez (Inter Milan) and Julián Álvarez (Atletico Madrid) will lead the frontline. Atlético Madrid trio Nicolás González, Thiago Almada, and Giuliano Simeone will add pace and depth to the attack.
In addition, Como youngster Nico Paz and Palmeiras forward José Manuel López could serve as surprise options for Scaloni.
Overall, with world-class options in every position, Scaloni’s Argentina once again enter the tournament as one of the strongest contenders for the World Cup title.
