Iran have completed their preparations for the World Cup in the United States after a series of dramatic developments. Despite war-related tensions, training disruptions, and visa complications, Team Melli have begun preparations. After arriving in Mexico, Iran now focus solely on their World Cup matches.
The US-Iran conflict began on February 28. Although several ceasefires were attempted, the clashes have continued. With only five days left before the World Cup, Iran had still not received U.S. visas. The team’s visas were only secured four days before the start of the tournament. Earlier, Iran beat Mali 2-0 in a warm-up match in Turkey.
Even after granting visas to players, the US administration issued a strict warning to Iran. Officials clearly stated that Iran must not misuse the opportunity. In a statement, they said, “The United States will remain extremely vigilant to ensure that Iran does not use this arrangement under false pretenses to secretly bring any terrorist into the country.”
Moreover, the United States informed Iran that the team will only be allowed to enter the country on the morning of their group-stage matches. They must leave again for Mexico after each game. Iran will have to travel to Seattle and Los Angeles for their matches.
It is also reported that 15 team officials have still not received visas, including Iran Football Federation president Mehdi Taj, who previously served in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Despite all these obstacles, Iran’s players arrived in Mexico last night. A small group of supporters welcomed them at Tijuana airport. Around a dozen fans greeted the players as their team bus left the airport.
Iran have already held their first training session ahead of the World Cup. They will begin their campaign on June 16 against New Zealand in Los Angeles.
