Egypt breathed a sigh of relief after head coach Hossam Hassan said captain Mohamed Salah's injury is not serious, raising hopes that the star forward will be available for the team's FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match against Australia.
Concern spread through the Egyptian camp after Salah was forced off with a left-foot injury during Egypt's 1-1 draw against Iran, a match that secured the Pharaohs' place in the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in the nation's history.
Hassan substituted Salah in the 56th minute at Lumen Field, replacing him with Mostafa Ziko. The 34-year-old was later seen applying ice to his left foot on the bench.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Hassan sought to ease fears over the injury.
"I spoke with Salah, and he assured me that he is fine and that the injury is not serious," the coach said. "Our medical team is monitoring him closely, and he will undergo further examinations after returning to the team hotel. I believe he will be back on the field very soon."
The former Liverpool star has been one of Egypt's standout performers at this year's expanded 48-team World Cup. Salah scored his 68th international goal in Egypt's 3-1 victory over New Zealand in the opening match and has also provided two assists during the tournament.
Inspired by their captain, the Pharaohs advanced beyond the group stage for the first time in their World Cup history.
Egypt will face Australia in a crucial Round of 32 match in Dallas on Friday, July 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 am Bangladesh time. Any absence for Salah would be a major blow to Egypt's hopes, although Hassan's optimistic update has provided reassurance for Egyptian supporters ahead of the knockout encounter.
