Egypt secured a milestone, advancing to the FIFA World Cup knockout phase for the first time following a hard-fought 1-1 draw against IR Iran.
Finishing as Group G runners-up, the Pharaohs now prepare for a Round of 32 showdown with Australia.
Mahmoud Saber provided a dream start for Egypt in the 5th minute, slotting home a close-range finish after Iranian keeper Alireza Beiranvand parried Mohamed Salah’s deflected shot.
IR Iran looked to respond immediately when Mehdi Taremi won a penalty following a foul by Mohamed Abdelmonem. However, Egypt’s Mostafa Shobeir maintained the lead by saving the spot-kick.
The lead proved short-lived as Ramin Rezaeian equalized in the 14th minute, firing from a sharp angle after Shobeir initially denied Milad Mohammadi.
Under the guidance of Hossam Hassan, Egypt controlled long spells of the second half. Drama peaked in stoppage time when VAR overturned a potential winner from Shojae Khalilzadeh for offside.
Shobeir then made a final vital stop against Saeid Ezatolahi to seal the draw. While Egypt celebrates its progression, IR Iran’s fate now rests on results from Groups J, K, and L.
