Cabo Verde scripted a FIFA World Cup fairy tale by securing a historic spot in the Round of 32 following a 0-0 stalemate against Saudi Arabia.
This hard-fought draw in the final Group H clash confirms the Blue Sharks’ progression alongside group leaders Spain, while the Saudi side finishes at the bottom of the pool with only two points.
The island nation’s remarkable journey to the knockouts included a memorable opening draw against the European champions and a 2-2 thriller with Uruguay.
In this decisive match, Jamiro Monteiro nearly broke the deadlock twice, but Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais parried his first-half drive and comfortably gathered a second-half effort set up by Wagner Pina.
Kevin Pina also threatened with a curling left-footed strike that narrowly missed the far post.
Late in the game, Nuno da Costa created significant pressure but failed to convert. Al-Owais thwarted Laros Duarte following a quick break by Da Costa, who later sent a side-footed effort wide of an open goal after a brilliant cross from Garry Rodrigues.
Despite these missed opportunities, manager Bubista will now lead his squad into a monumental showdown against defending champions Argentina in Miami on 3 July.
