Centuries-Old Tradition: Kaaba to Undergo Ceremonial Washing, Tuesday

Collected Photo

The annual ceremonial washing of the Holy Kaaba will be held on Tuesday, Muharram 15, corresponding to June 30. The interior wall of the Kaaba will be washed with holy Zamzam water mixed with rose water, prepared earlier by the General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques.

The washing of the Holy Kaaba follows the example set by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Towels are used to wipe the walls of the Kaaba. The interior walls are cleansed with a white cloth dipped in rose and musk perfumes. Zamzam water mixed with rose perfume is splashed on the floor and is wiped with bare hands and palm leaves.

The washing of the Holy Kaaba is one of the most cherished religious traditions associated with the Grand Mosque in Makkah. The occasion reflects the profound reverence Muslims hold for the Holy Kaaba and symbolizes the continuous care devoted to Islam's holiest site, which has remained the Qibla of Muslims throughout the ages.

The washing of the Holy Kaaba is a longstanding tradition deeply rooted in the history of the Grand Mosque. For centuries, it has represented an expression of reverence and respect, carrying profound spiritual significance that reflects the Kaaba's central place in the hearts of Muslims around the world.

Each year, the doors of the Holy Kaaba are opened in preparation for the ceremonial washing of its interior walls and floor. The meticulous process reflects the exceptional care dedicated to preserving the Kaaba and its historical and architectural features, which form an integral part of Islamic heritage.

The ceremony carries special spiritual significance as it is associated with the holiest place in Islam. It also reflects a longstanding tradition of caring for the Grand Mosque through continuous cleaning, maintenance, and preservation of its Kiswa and facilities while safeguarding every detail in a manner befitting its sacred status.

The washing ceremony forms part of the year-round efforts dedicated to serving the Two Holy Mosques and their visitors. It is carried out according to a comprehensive ecosystem of organizational and technical procedures designed to preserve and maintain the Grand Mosque to the highest standards.

The process begins with preparing the interior of the Holy Kaaba, followed by washing its walls, floor, and columns with Zamzam water mixed with rosewater and premium fragrances. The interior is then perfumed with the finest incense and aromatic oils, reflecting the meticulous attention devoted to this annual occasion observed by Muslims around the world.

The annual washing of the Holy Kaaba also underscores the continuity of the care devoted to the Grand Mosque across generations. It stands as a symbol of Muslims' enduring connection to their Qibla and their unity in reverence for the Grand Mosque.   (Source: Saudi Gazzette)
