How to Prepare for an Online Interview

Tanjiba Sultana Brishti. Agamir Somoy.

Virtual interviews have become one of the most crucial mediums for professional communication. Tanziba Sultana Brishti, Human Resources Officer at Tanjiba Ajinomoto Bangladesh, shares key insights on navigating them successfully.

In an online interview, simply presenting your qualifications is not enough; mastering technical and environmental factors is equally essential. There is no alternative to thorough preparation for a successful virtual interview.

Technical Preparation and Device Functionality

Technology is the foundation of any virtual interview. At least one day before the interview, check whether your laptop, desktop, or smartphone is working properly. Ensure the specific platform being used—such as Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams—is installed and updated on your device in advance. Half an hour before the interview begins, test your camera angle, microphone sound, and headphone performance. Here are some tips.

1. Uninterrupted Internet and Backup Connection
During an interview, a sudden internet disconnection can be extremely awkward and distracting. Therefore, ensure a stable and high-speed internet connection. Along with broadband internet, keep your mobile data plan active so that you can instantly switch to a mobile hotspot if the primary connection fails. Additionally, keep your devices fully charged in case of a power outage.

2. Choosing the Right Environment and Background
Select a quiet corner of your home that is free from noise and external disturbances. Make sure your background looks clean and professional—cluttered items should not appear in the frame. If your background isn’t up to standard, use the platform’s “blur background” feature or a simple virtual background. Ensure that the lighting comes from the front so that your face is clearly visible.

3. Dressing Professionally and Maintaining a Polished Appearance
Even though it’s an online interview, do not be casual with your attire. Dress as formally as you would for an in-person interview. This not only conveys sincerity and professionalism to the employers but also boosts your own confidence. Avoid overly bright or neon colors; instead, choose elegant and light shades.

4. Body Language and Eye Contact
Maintaining proper body language in a virtual setting can be challenging but is very important. During the interview, practice looking directly at the camera lens rather than at the screen or your own image. This will make the other person feel that you are making direct eye contact with them, creating a strong connection. Sit up straight, wear a gentle smile, and use positive gestures while speaking.

5. In-Depth Research About the Organization and Role
Before the interview, gather detailed information about the organization and the position you have applied for. Have a clear understanding of the company’s mission, recent achievements, work culture, and your potential scope of work. Prepare to highlight how your previous experience aligns with this new role, using specific examples to support your points.

6. Preparing Digital Notes and Essential Documents
One major advantage of an online interview is that you can keep important reference notes within sight. You can jot down key points—such as highlights from your CV, application details, organizational facts, and a couple of questions to ask the interviewers—in a diary or on small sticky notes placed beside your monitor. However, be careful not to glance at your notes repeatedly while speaking, as it may give the impression that you are distracted or underprepared.

7. The Importance of Mock Tests
To overcome interview anxiety and reduce any stiffness, it’s highly beneficial to practice with a mock or demo interview. You can invite a friend or colleague to join a trial session via a video link, or simply record yourself answering common questions on camera and review the footage later. This prior practice will significantly boost your confidence and help eliminate nervousness during the actual interview.
