For someone to whom life is nothing but music, even the slightest strain on their voice naturally creates anxiety among the fans. Bollywood's iconic singer Sonu Nigam's recent Instagram video has stirred just such a wave of concern across the music industry.
The 52-year-old musician has been suffering from severe back and shoulder pain for the past week. Doctors have informed that a major nerve in his shoulder has been severely compressed, causing intense pain from his neck down to his arm.
In the video, Sonu Nigam is seen with a large analgesic medical patch applied to his right shoulder. But more than the pain, Sonu's bigger worry right now is his voice. To reduce the severe nerve pain, doctors have prescribed him high-dose painkillers and muscle relaxants, the side effects of which have caused Nigam's muscles around his vocal cords to become overly relaxed. As a result, his famously sweet voice is sounding somewhat heavy and dull. For a perfectionist singer, this change in his voice just before a concert is quite a major setback.
Normally, in such nerve ailment, doctors recommend complete bed rest and limiting neck movement. But Sonu Nigam appeared in his characteristic fighting spirit. He has a mega live concert scheduled at Mumbai's Shardaprasad Arena later this month, and all tickets are already sold out. Not wanting to disappoint his fans, Sonu made it clear: "Even if it hurts, I will sing. I am undergoing physiotherapy and giving it my all to get on stage."
From "Sandesh Aate Hain" and "Tu Bhi Suraj Hai" to the Oscar-nominated "Kal Ho Naa Ho," Sonu Nigam's voice has been the companion of joy and sorrow for people across the Indian subcontinent for three decades. The journey that began in 1993 under Gulshan Kumar's guidance remains just as bright in 2026. From industry peers like Arijit Singh to Shreya Ghoshal, everyone has sent messages on social media wishing Sonu a speedy recovery.
The way Sonu is showing his commitment to his music and his fans, even while undergoing rigorous treatment and painful physiotherapy, is truly commendable. Fans pray that the Melody King recovers fully soon and returns to shake the stage with his magical voice once again.
