The son of BNP lawmaker Azharul Islam Mannan, Khairul Islam Sajib, has been taken to the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective (DB) Police office. He will be further interrogated regarding allegations of extortion filed against him. Sajib is the senior joint convener of the Narayanganj district unit of the Juba Dal (BNP's youth wing).
He was being taken to Dhaka from the district Police Superintendent's office around 6:30 PM on Saturday (today). Earlier in the afternoon, the MP's son from the Narayanganj-3 constituency was arrested.
Sajib was at a residence in the capital's Bashundhara Residential Area. Additional Police Superintendent (Crime) Tarek Al Mehedi confirmed the arrest news. The action was carried out with the assistance of Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police.
Mehedi said, "Sajib was brought to the Narayanganj District Police Superintendent's office around 5 PM. There are several allegations of extortion against him."
In the evening, Mehedi briefed journalists in front of the Police Superintendent's office. "On the instructions of higher authorities, he (Sajib) was taken into custody. We requested his cooperation to come with us. He complied. We interrogated him at the SP office."
Sajib faced questioning for over an hour at the District Police Superintendent's office. He was later taken into the custody of the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police. However, Police Officer Mehedi did not provide details regarding the extortion allegations.
He said, "We brought him here on the instructions of higher authorities. I cannot share any details, yet."
However, in a message posted by Police Headquarters in the evening, it was confirmed that Sajib has been taken to the DMP's DB office for further interrogation.
