Faridpur: Chhatra League leader dies 5 hours into DB custody

Md. Ishtiaq Ahmed Pranto, a leader of the banned organization Chhatra League who was arrested from Madhukhali upazila in Faridpur, has died. He passed away while undergoing treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital around 7:30 AM on Monday, approximately five hours after being taken into custody by the Detective Branch (DB) of police.
The deceased, Pranto, was the son of the late Eskendar Haider from the Gondardia area of Madhukhali municipality.
Pranto's uncle and former councilor, Mirza Abu Jafar, said that a team from the district Detective Police arrested Pranto from their home on Sunday night. Later that morning, they learned that he had died while undergoing treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital. Upon hearing the news, family members rushed to the hospital. He said Pranto had been ill and had been staying at home.
Meanwhile, according to sources at the district Detective Police, an operation was conducted in an open space north of Pranto's residence in the Gondardia area around 2:00 AM. At that time, they recovered 100 grams of cannabis from him and arrested him. Later, he was brought to Faridpur and kept in the custody of the district Detective Branch for legal procedures.
Police claim that while in custody, Pranto fell ill and was first taken to Faridpur General Hospital. Later, he was transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for better treatment, where he died while undergoing treatment.
Md. Mahmudul Hasan, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Faridpur Kotwali Police Station, confirmed the death. He said that an accused arrested with cannabis from the Madhukhali area fell ill and was admitted to the hospital. He died there while undergoing treatment.
He further stated that the body has been kept in the morgue for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Subsequent legal proceedings regarding the incident are underway.
