After a heavy 7–1 defeat to Germany in their opening World Cup match, debutants Curaçao bounced back with a resilient performance to hold Ecuador to a goalless draw, securing their first-ever point in the tournament.
The standout performer of the match was Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room, who delivered an extraordinary display between the posts. He recorded a tournament-high 15 saves in 90 minutes, marking the highest number of saves in a regulation World Cup match since 1966.
The Group stage clash took place in Kansas City, where both teams entered under pressure after opening-match defeats. A loss today would have severely damaged their chances of progressing to the knockout stage.
Ecuador dominated large portions of the match, launching wave after wave of attacks, but Room stood firm, producing a series of remarkable saves to keep Curaçao in the game.
While Curaçao managed a few chances in the first half, the second half was largely a defensive battle as they absorbed sustained pressure from the South American side.
In the closing moments, Ecuador were awarded a penalty, but the decision was overturned after a VAR review, leaving the team stunned and frustrated.
The match ultimately ended 0–0, with both sides sharing the points and keeping their hopes of advancing to the next round alive.
