Preparation to Clean Qurbani Waste within 8 Hours in South, 12 Hours in North Dhaka
Sanitation workers from both Dhaka North and South City Corporations have begun field-level operations to clear sacrificial animal waste from the capital's alleys. They announced that more than 16,000 cleaners and over 750 vehicles have been deployed for the task this year.
On Thursday (May 28), sanitation workers were seen collecting waste from various neighborhoods across the city starting from the afternoon.
The Dhaka South City Corporation has set a target to remove the first day's waste by 9:30 PM, aiming to complete the cleanup within 8 hours. On the other hand, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) stated that they are prepared to finish removing the Qurbani waste well within 12 hours on Eid day.
Around 11:30 AM on the day, city corporation cleaners were seen navigating various alleys in the capital's Dhanmondi and Lalbagh areas with pickup vans and handcarts to collect the sacrificial animal waste. After collection, the waste was swiftly transferred from small vans into large dumping trucks and taken to designated Secondary Transfer Stations (STS).
The city corporations stated that they are determined to ensure 100% waste removal within the designated time to maintain the sanctity of Eid-ul-Azha and prevent environmental pollution. Along with the field-level cleaners, senior officials from the corporations are also on the ground to supervise the waste removal operations.
According to the Waste Management Department of Dhaka North City, approximately 16,890 workers will be engaged in removing the waste. This includes 6,165 of DNCC’s own sanitation workers, 4,500 van service workers, and 5,400 volunteers. Additionally, three extra workers will be assigned to each of the 275 pickup vans, totaling 825 workers.
To supervise the waste removal activities, 10 separate monitoring teams have been formed for 10 zones, and a central control room will remain operational. Alongside designating temporary waste collection centers in each area, emergency preparations have also been made to tackle rain or adverse weather conditions.
Meanwhile, the city authorities have urged citizens to assist the city corporation by using polybags to ensure cleanliness. Stakeholders have also been requested to remain cautious and carry out Qurbani activities in an environmentally friendly manner while disposing of waste at designated locations.
