Death Penalty, Life Terms in MC College Rape Case

A court has sentenced one man to death and three others to life imprisonment in the rape case at the MC College dormitory in Sylhet and four individuals were acquitted.
Public Prosecutor Abul Hossain confirmed the matter. Judge Swapan Kumar Sarkar of the Sylhet Druto Bichar Tribunal delivered the verdict on Tuesday.
The convicts sentenced to death is named Saifur Rahman. Those sentenced to life imprisonment are Shah Mahbubur Rahman Roni, Tarekul Islam Roni, and Arjun Laskar.
Those acquitted from the case are Ainuddin alias Ainul, Misbaul Islam alias Rajan, Robiul, and Mahfuzur Rahman.
On 25 September 2020, a woman was gang raped after holding her husband captive at the MC College dormitory. Her husband later filed a case against six named individuals and two unidentified suspects at the Shahporan Police Station.
Within three days, Police and RAB conducted operations and arrested the six named in the FIR and two suspects. They also gave confessional statements in court. DNA tests matched with six out of the eight defendants.
On 3 December 2021, the investigating officer of the case, Shahporan Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Indranil Bhattacharya, submitted the charge sheet against eight people to the court. They were involved in the Tilagarh Chhatra League.
On the night of the incident, police raided the room of Saifur at the college dormitory. Firearms were seized during the raid. A case was filed by the police against Saifur under the Arms Act. Later, Roni was also added to that case.
Following the plaintiff's application, the High Court ordered both cases to be completed in the same court. According to court sources, the two cases were transferred from the Nari O Shishu Nirjaton Daman Tribunal to the Druto Bichar Tribunal in May 2025.
