Four people were killed and at least 10 to 12 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses in Natun Bazar vicinity of Dhaka early Wednesday morning. The accident occurred around 6:00am.
According to reports, a bus of Islam Paribahan coming from Patuakhali lost control, broke through the road divider, and got into the opposite lane. It then collided head-on with an Akash Paribahan bus heading from Uttara to Gulistan. Both buses were heavily damaged, and the crash caused severe traffic congestion, creating major suffering for Eid-bound passengers.
The deceased have been identified as Laizu Begum (38), her husband Kabir Jamaddar (47), Khushi Begum (35), and Rubel (22). They were from Mongla in Bagerhat and Mirzaganj in Patuakhali.
After the accident, additional police reached the scene and brought the situation under control. However, the driver and helper of the Islam Paribahan bus fled immediately after the crash. The injured were taken to Kurmitola General Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Several of them are reported to be in critical condition.
Sub-Inspector Nesar Uddin of Vatara Police Station said the road in the Norda area was crowded at the time. The speeding Islam Paribahan bus lost control, mounted the divider, and crashed into the oncoming bus. He added that the Akash Paribahan bus was carrying many passengers, which increased the number of casualties.
He also noted that, according to passengers, the Patuakhali-bound bus had been driven recklessly from the very beginning of the journey. The behavior of the driver and helper was also reportedly unruly. After the crash, both damaged buses were removed by cranes and taken to the police station. Traffic in the area has since returned to normal.
