Three members of the same family, who were burned in a gas explosion in Bandar upazila of Narayanganj, have died while undergoing treatment at the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka.
Vegetable vendor Abdul Mannan (50), who was critically burned, passed away around 4:45 AM on Monday. About five hours later, his son Siam (19) also succumbed to his injuries.
Earlier, on June 12, Mannan's wife Sultana (35) had died while undergoing treatment.
Relatives said the bodies of the three deceased were buried at their ancestral home in Cumilla.
The explosion occurred on the morning of June 11 at a house in the Chanpur area of Madanpur Union in Bandar upazila, leaving four members of the family and a neighbor's child burned.
Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, Resident Surgeon and Assistant Professor at the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, said that Sultana had suffered burns to about 90 percent of her body, her son Siam had 77 percent burns, and Abdul Mannan had 35 percent burns.
In the same incident, 13-year-old Mim, another family member, suffered 41 percent burns and is still in critical condition undergoing treatment. Additionally, neighbor child Hazrat Ali (8), who sustained 8 percent burns, is also receiving medical care.
After the incident, Jahangir Alam, Senior Station Officer of Kanchpur Fire Station, said the house used both Titas Gas connections and an LPG cylinder. It is suspected that gas had accumulated in the kitchen overnight and ignited when a fire was lit in the morning, triggering the explosion.
However, the Fire Service said the actual source of the gas leak can only be confirmed after the investigation is completed.
