A court has announced the verdict in the case involving the murder of a child, whose body was cut into six pieces and scattered to hide the evidence three and a half years ago in Chattogram.
The court has sentenced the accused, Abir Ali, 23, to death and a fine of Tk 1 lakh, with an additional one-year simple imprisonment in case of default.
Chattogram Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Muhammad Ali Akkas announced the verdict at 1 pm on Wednesday. The Additional Public Prosecutor Jalal Uddin said, “The court has awarded the accused the maximum penalty of death under Section 302 of the Penal Code for the crime of murdering the child. For the crime of dismembering the body and hiding it, he has been sentenced to five years of imprisonment under Section 201 of the Penal Code.”
On the afternoon of 15 November 2022, Alina Islam Ayat, the four-year-old girl went missing. A General Diary (GD) was filed at the EPZ Police Station, prompting the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to launch an investigation.
PBI arrested Abir on 24 November on charges of murdering Ayat. On 25 November, he confessed to his crimes in court.
Abir kidnapped Ayat on 15 November and strangled her to death before cutting the body into six pieces. On 16 November, he threw three pieces into the sea near the Bay Terminal area. That night, he disposed of the remaining three pieces in a drain at the end of Akmal Ali Road.
The investigation revealed that Abir’s family lived as tenants in a building owned by Ayat’s grandfather, Manjur Hossain. Although Abir was born in that house, his parents lived separately due to marital conflict. Abir lived with his mother but frequently visited his father’s residence.
Driven by frustration over his unemployment, Abir planned to kidnap Ayat from her wealthy family to demand a large ransom. With the help of his associate, he abducted the child and killed her at his father’s house. The associate was a minor.
PBI Inspector Mostafizur Rahman Chowdhury said, “Out of the two accused in the case, the trial for Abir Ali has been completed. As the other accused is a minor, his trial is ongoing in the Children’s Court.”
