Cox’s Bazar finally saw sunset on Monday after nine days of severe rain, flooding, and unfavorable weather that had blocked the horizon since 4 July.
Thousands of tourists and locals flocked to the beach as the sky cleared to take in the breathtaking view of the sun setting with a crimson glow. The Kalatoli, Sugandha, and Laboni points became jubilant as the afternoon wore on.
Some walked on the sands, while others enjoyed the sunset sitting on beach umbrellas and chairs. Many captured these memorable moments on their mobile phones through photos and videos, and tourists wore smiles of relief as nature returned to its charming form after several days of disaster.
Cox’s Bazar Weather Office said the heavy rainfall continued until 11 July. While there was some rain for a short time on 12 July, no significant rainfall occurred from then until Monday. As a result, the captivating sunset was seen in a clear sky after a long wait.
Local resident Zahidul Islam added that the beach was almost empty due to continuous rain and floods, but the bustle of people has returned. Everyone is enjoying the sunset with joy, which is also a relief for the locals.
However, although the weather has somewhat normalized, the risk in the sea has not yet fully passed. For the safety of tourists, red flags have been hoisted at various locations on the beach, including Kalatoli, Sugandha, and Laboni points.
Senior Lifeguard member Rashid Ahmed said, “It has not rained since Monday morning. For this reason, the gathering of tourists at the beach has increased. We are constantly warning the tourists to stay safe.”
Assistant Meteorologist of Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Department Abdul Hannan added that only 4 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours. There is no immediate possibility of continuous heavy rain, though it might rain for one or two days on Thursday or Friday.
According to the district administration’s flood situation report, the normal average rainfall in Cox’s Bazar for the month of July is 924 millimeters. However, 823 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in just nine days, from 4 July to 12 July.
