Imports from India through the Darshana international rail route in Chuadanga have increased once again, revitalizing the local rail yard.
The surge in freight trains has heightened activity for laborers, C&F agents, truck drivers, transport workers, and businessmen, while officials anticipate a significant rise in government revenue.
Businessmen said that import levels previously plummeted due to the dollar crisis and LC (Letter of Credit) complications following the change in government. However, banks are now approving LCs based on demand, normalizing the import of soybean, husk, stone, onions, and corn.
As of 26 June, the Darshana rail yard has unloaded 20 freight rakes, and officials expect this number to grow by month-end. Regular rake arrivals provide financial benefits to traders, transport owners, drivers, and laborers.
Workers are quickly transferring goods from wagons to trucks for distribution across the country.
A senior customs official revealed a plan to import products via around 200 rakes during the current fiscal year. He said, “Import activities have increased on this route. This will play a positive role in increasing the government’s revenue income.”
According to official data, the 2023-24 fiscal year saw 5,76,559 metric tons of goods imported via 9,749 wagons, generating Tk 26.94 crore in revenue. Imports dropped in 2024-25 to 252,101 metric tons across 4,486 wagons, bringing in Tk 11.40 crore.
However, authorities are optimistic that the current increase in volume will boost revenue significantly this year.
Darshana International Railway Station Manager Najma Yasmin told Agamir Somoy, “Darshana international railway is an important route for product import. After August 5 last year, the movement of freight trains and imports on this route decreased. Now the situation has improved.”
She noted an increase in wagons carrying corn, stone, and fly ash. If importers continue to use the route regularly, it will increase income for traders, transport workers, and Bangladesh Railway.
