Homicide Over Trivial Matters Rises

Bangladesh's Saturday began with a crippling loss which was also a grave warning sign for the entire nation. In Kapasia of Gazipur, the slit-throat bodies of five family members were found inside a house.

According to relatives, police, and local residents, the head of the household, Forkan Mia, allegedly committed the murders and then disappeared. The motive behind such a brutal act remains unclear. However, based on several clues found near the bodies, some believe the horrifying incident may have been driven by financial disputes or the fallout from an extramarital relationship.
Experts, however, view the killing of one’s own wife and children over financial disagreements or so-called “disobedience” as a reflection of deeper social instability. Citing several recent incidents, they argue these are not isolated events but rather alarming social warning signs. Fathers killing infants for crying, parents murdering children due to extramarital affairs, and in some cases parents themselves becoming victims of their own children. There are even instances where children are killed and their bodies dismembered to frame neighbors.
Sociologists and crime analysts say that not just the Gazipur incident, but also a series of murders over recent times suggest that homicide has become disturbingly a normal event. People are being murdered over the slightest provocation.
Supporting this claim are several incidents from the past few months. On April 20, four members of the same family were murdered by having their throats slit in Niamatpur of Naogaon. Police later said the killings stemmed from complications over property distribution.

Earlier this year, another gruesome incident shocked the nation when three members of a family were murdered by throat-slitting in Manipur village of Homna upazila in Cumilla. The motive behind that killing remains unknown.
Statistics from Police Headquarters show that in the first four months of the current year, 1,142 murder cases were filed. In 2025, a total of 3,786 cases of murder and brutal slaying were recorded nationwide, compared to 3,442 cases in 2024 and 3,023 cases in 2023. Analysis of the first four months of this year indicates an average of 265 murders per month. The highest number of murders occurred in the Dhaka Range. In April alone, 288 murders were recorded nationwide, compared to 317 in March, 250 in February, and 287 in January.
In the Dhaka metropolitan area, 78 murders occurred in the past four months—21 in January, 16 in February, 24 in March, and 17 in April. According to Police Headquarters data, 1,142 murder cases were filed in the first four months of this year. An analysis of these figures shows that the country is witnessing an average of 265 murders every month, with the Dhaka Range accounting for the highest number of incidents.

According to Dr. Touhidul Haque, associate professor at the Institute of Social Welfare and Research of the University of Dhaka and a social and crime analyst, social structures are breaking down due to family discord, mutual mistrust, and moral decay. Minor family and social violence are creating major instability in society. Conflicts and resentment are dividing families into multiple factions, giving rise to feelings of vengeance among individuals.

Touhidul Haque believes that the lack of moral education in families and educational institutions, the absence of visible justice when incidents occur, and the failure to receive proper family guidance are being reflected in society.

Muhammad Mahbub Kaiser, associate professor at the Department of Sociology of the University of Dhaka, thinks that a kind of mismatch has emerged between rapid socio-cultural change and people’s mental preparedness. According to him, technological advancement has connected people to global social systems, but society lacks the mental and social readiness required to adapt to that reality. In sociological terms, this is known as “cultural lag.”

He adds that under the influence of globalization, social values and family bonds are gradually weakening. As a result, accumulated anger, frustration, inferiority, or conflict within relationships often turns into extreme violence.

Experts say that tackling such situations requires more than just law enforcement action. What is needed is mutual respect within families, greater awareness of mental health, stronger social bonds, and the rebuilding of human values. Because the destruction of a family does not mean only the loss of a few lives; it signifies the gradual extinguishing of the light of humanity within a society.

Mental health experts caution that perpetrators of such crimes should not be labeled mentally ill without proper psychological evaluation.

Professor Dr. Helal Uddin Ahmed, a mental health specialist, noted that simply describing an offender as mentally ill can lead to reduced punishment. He explained that such incidents generally occur in two ways: one is planned, and the other is driven by sudden anger or resentment. A person does not become dangerously violent overnight; when multiple grievances accumulate, they can lead to such horrific acts. Schools, families, society, and the state all share responsibility. Above all, if there is imbalance in personality development from childhood through adulthood, such brutality and savagery can emerge within a person.

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Noor Mohammad believes that prompt filing of cases, proper investigations, and bringing the guilty swiftly under the law with exemplary punishment are critically important to contain such crimes. According to him, exemplary punishment can instill fear among potential offenders and help deter crime to some extent.
