Electricity situation will improve from this evening: Junior Minister

State Minister for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit has stated that the country's electricity situation will see some improvement starting from this evening.

He said that load shedding will also decrease by the evening. However, it is not possible to specify right now exactly when the fuel crisis will be fully resolved.

He made these remarks today, Wednesday, while responding to questions from journalists at the Secretariat.

The State Minister explained that due to rough conditions in the Bay of Bengal, gas supply from one Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU/LNG terminal) remains suspended. Another terminal is also unable to operate at full capacity due to an accident. This has created a fuel crisis in the country, disrupting power generation and leading to increased load shedding.

Noting that no one has control over natural disasters, Anindya Islam Amit stated that the government is making its utmost effort to manage the situation through alternative means.

He informed that the process of importing LNG from Malaysia via ISO tanks is underway. Advice from experts and business leaders is also being sought to address the crisis.

The State Minister noted that domestic gas production cannot be increased overnight. Therefore, the ministry is moving toward long-term solutions.

He blamed the flawed policies of the previous Awami League government in the power and energy sector for the current crisis, adding that the country would have faced such a crisis at any time.

Anindya Islam Amit further said that as the crisis hit during the summer season, public suffering has intensified. Expressing regret over this, he once again apologized to the public.

He mentioned that because one LNG terminal is completely shut down and the other is operating at limited capacity, the gas deficit cannot be bridged immediately. However, the government is taking all necessary steps to restore normalcy.
