Actress and filmmaker Meher Afroz Shaon has deleted her controversial social media post about the July uprising following widespread criticism.
The Facebook post was no longer visible on Shaon’s account as of Saturday.
She came under intense public backlash after publishing the post. The controversy also led to a general diary (GD) being filed against her at Shahbagh Police Station.
Shaon originally shared the post on Wednesday, the first day of July, a month closely associated with the 2024 mass uprising in Bangladesh.
On Friday, the Rashtra Sanglap Forum filed the GD at Shahbagh Police Station. The complaint was submitted by the organization’s Central Member Secretary Anam Ayas and Tuhin Farazi, along with Central Chief Organizer Muhammad Shah Alam Badsha. In addition to Shaon, actress Mahiya Mahi and a woman identified as Shanta Farzana were also named in the complaint.
According to the GD, Shaon made an offensive social media post about the July movement and, through several video messages, portrayed the uprising as a staged or orchestrated event while making remarks deemed insulting toward the state and the movement.
Earlier, Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Moniruzzaman told the media that a GD had been filed against the three individuals over allegations of insulting the July movement online.
He said the matter has been referred to the Detective Branch’s Cyber Crime Division for investigation because it involves cyber-related allegations. The investigation is currently underway.
