Former minister Dr. Dipu Moni, who is currently detained at Munshiganj Jail, is being released on parole to attend the funeral of her husband, Barrister Toufiq Nawaz. She will be released on parole for 12 hours tomorrow, Thursday, following an application by the couple’s daughter, Tani Dipaboli Nawaz.
Dipu Moni’s lawyer, Gazi Faisal, confirmed the matter. He said, “We applied for four days. The release has been granted for 12 hours under the authority of the district administration. She will be released for 12 hours from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm tomorrow.”
The lawyer said Dipu Moni will leave on parole and go to her home in Kalabagan in the capital to see her husband for the last time.
Earlier, at around noon, Tani Dipaboli visited her mother at Munshiganj Jail.
Dipu Moni, the country’s first female foreign minister and first female education minister, has been detained at Munshiganj Jail after being arrested in several cases following the July uprising of 2024. Her husband, Toufiq Nawaz, had been suffering from illness for a long time. He died Tuesday night at Continental Hospital in Dhaka, formerly known as United Hospital.
Supreme Court lawyer Toufiq Nawaz practiced classical music. He suffered a stroke in 2019. On different occasions, he came to court in a wheelchair to see his wife on the days she appeared in court. His relatives last brought him to court on May 27.
Although Dipu Moni was granted bail in several cases by the High Court, she was not released because her name appeared in many other cases. On May 27, her daughter Tani Dipaboli had applied for her mother to be released on parole for seven days, citing her husband’s illness.
However, there was no further response to the application submitted to the Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner.
